AppleShare IP 6.0 Beta Seed 2 is a technology evaluation release and will expire on August 31, 1998.
This is not a supported product, but we encourage you to try it and give us feedback. This copy is for evaluation purposes only and is offered at no charge. We cannot guarantee that any subsequent releases will be offered free of charge, but we suggest that you check back frequently for any revisions of this design release.
Remember that the software you are receiving is in development. There are inherent risks in putting unreleased software on your machine. Although we feel the product is stable, there are still risks. We suggest that you not use this product in production or mission critical operations; or where 100% reliability is required. As much as possible, we will respond to problems and provide updates to deal with issues, but we cannot guarantee all problems will be addressed. As added precautions, we recommend that you backup your System Folder and hard drives prior to testing, save your work often and continue to backup your hard drives as often as necessary to protect your data. Apple cannot accept liability for any lost data or other injury.

Requirements for Running AppleShare IP 6.0
Important: MacsBug must be installed on both server and client in order to use this seed software. For MacOS 8.1 use MacsBug version 6.5.4a4. You will find this version of MacsBug included in the AppleShare IP Seed package.
Macintosh computers running AppleShare IP Server 6.0 Seed
• CPU: Any Apple Power Macintosh computer or Macintosh Server with a PowerPC™ G3, 604e, 604, 603e 6500 series, or 601 microprocessor.
• RAM: 48 MB of memory with virtual memory turned on; 64 MB with virtual memory turned off. More memory may be needed if you are using one or more web server plug-ins. These are preliminary memory requirements, which are likely to change prior to the release of this product.
• System Software: MacOS 8.1 is required.
Macintosh computers running AppleShare Client 3.8 Seed
• System Software: 7.6 or later with Open Transport 1.1.2 or later.
AppleShare IP 6.0 Installation and Setup
1. Do a clean installation of MacOS 8.1 using Easy Install.
Note: If you are installing AppleShare IP 6.0 Seed on a computer that has run a previous version of AppleShare or Macintosh file sharing, make a backup copy of your Users & Groups Data File before you do a clean installation of system software.
2. Install MacsBug 6.5.4a4.
3. Make AppleTalk active in the AppleTalk control panel.
4. Make sure that TCP/IP is configured appropriately in the TCP/IP control panel (IP address, router address, and so on).
5. Use the AppleShare IP Installer to install the AppleShare IP 6.0. Use Easy Install to install all of the services. Use Custom Install to install a selection of services.
6. Restart your computer.
7. When your computer restarts, you will see an alert dialog box that instructs you to enter
or verify the Owner name and password in the File Sharing control panel. The Sharing
Setup control panel is opened for you. Close the File Sharing control panel when you have entered or verified your Owner name and password.
8. After startup completes, you must launch the AppleShare IP Easy Setup application. This application is contained in the AppleShare IP 6.0 folder on your startup disk. Use Easy Setup to set up and start the AppleShare IP 6.0 services and to start the AppleShare IP Manager. When Easy Setup asks you for a serial number, enter the following serial number:

Click the right arrow key to continue. Easy Setup continues to set up and start the AppleShare IP servers. When you quit Easy Setup, have it start the AppleShare IP Manager for you.
If you forget to launch the AppleShare IP Easy Setup application, the AppleShare IP Manager will launch it for you and exit until this has been completed.
9. Use the AppleShare IP Manager window to see the status of servers and to open the administration program for each AppleShare IP 6.0 server.
10. When prompted to enter a name and password, you must enter a valid administrator name and password to continue. Enter the name and password that is specified in your File Sharing control panel.
AppleShare Client Software Installation
1. On the computer on which you installed the AppleShare IP 6.0 Seed software, share the Client Software 3.8 folder and assign access privileges so that users have read access to this folder.
2. Ensure that MacOS 7.6 or later and Open Transport 1.1.2 or later are installed on users' computers and that TCP is configured.
3. Ensure that MacsBug 6.5.4a4 is installed on users' computers.
4. From a user's computer, connect to the Web & File Server, mount the Client Software 3.8 volume, and open the AppleShare Client 3.8 folder.
5. Double-click the Installer in the AppleShare Client 3.8 folder. Follow the instructions the Installer provides.
6. Restart the user's computer.
Note: If you are installing onto a machine running non-U.S. system software, manually drag the U.S. version of "AppleShare" file into your Extensions Folder inside the system folder instead of using the installer. The client installer installs a localized version of the client if you are installing onto a non-U.S. system, and the localized versions do not behave correctly in this version. The U.S. version of the client software (the "AppleShare" file) can be found inside the client installer folder, at the same level as the installer application.

The electronic version of the AppleShare IP Getting Started manual is available in pdf format for this AppleShare IP Seed release. To view this pdf file, you will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 installed.
An HTML version of AppleShare IP Help is also available for this Seed release and will be installed on your server by the AppleShare IP Installer along with the software. To view AppleShare IP Help, you may double click on the "AppleShare IP Help" alias contained in the "AppleShare IP 6.0" folder on the root of your startup disk or you may select "AppleShare IP Help" from the Help menu when running the AppleShare IP Admin applications. Double clicking on the alias or selecting from the Help menu will launch your Web browser for viewing the AppleShare IP Help.
Known Problems
MacOS 8.1
• When sharing a CD ROM disc from a server which is running MacOS 8.1, clients may encounter errors when accessing the files on the CD. If it is necessary to share CD ROM discs from your server, you may avoid the problem by copying the contents of the CD to a large hard drive, or by continuing to use MacOS 8.0 on the server until a MacOS 8.1 fix is available. The version of MacOS which runs on the client does not affect this problem.
Web & File Admin
• In low memory situations, Web & File Admin may crash. If necessary, turn on Virtual Memory or quit other applications. In addition, make sure that you set aside enough memory in the AppleShare IP Cache panel for your other applications to launch, including Web & File Admin.
Registry
• The AppleShare IP Registry will convert your Users & Groups file to run with AppleShare IP 6.0 the first time you reboot with AppleShare IP installed. Since this file will no longer work with Personal File Sharing after the conversion, a copy of the original file is placed in your Preferences folder. The file is named Users & Groups Data File Backup. The copy of the original file may be used if you decide to restore your machine to Personal File Sharing after de-installing AppleShare IP 6.0.
Web & File Server
• If a computer that is running the Web & File Server crashes, check your hard disks by running Disk First Aid before you start the Web & File Server again. Disk First Aid is located in the Utilities folder on your MacOS CD ROM disc.
• The Adobe Acrobat™ Installer cannot be used while the Web & File Server is running. Be sure to install Adobe Acrobat before you start the Web & File Server.
• AppleShare IP 6.0 is not compatible with ARA Multiport Server software. You should not run them on the same computer.
• Under some circumstances you may not be able to install PC applications from Windows File Sharing Server. To perform net installations of applications that are partitioned on multiple floppy disks, create a folder 'X' and copy each disk as a separate subfolder. Then make the parent folder 'X' a share point. From the client, connect to the share point and perform the installation.
AppleShare Client 3.8
• If you have problems connecting, make sure that you can ping the server. If you can ping the server but you cannot connect, report the problem as a bug. If you can't ping the server you have a connectivity problem.
• If the Chooser hangs when mounting volumes (after the OK button has been clicked in the
volume list dialog), try disabling the Apple Menu Options control panel on the client computer.
• If a user makes an alias to an AppleShare IP volume and uses TCP to connect to that volume, both TCP/IP and AppleTalk must be active on the user’s computer. Due to a limitation in the Alias Manager, AppleTalk must be active to resolve the alias.
• Alias problems on MacOS 7.6: If you open an alias to a volume on a server that is already mounted, the Finder may crash. This only occurs on MacOS 7.6 and 7.6.1, and not on Mac OS 8.0 and later.
• The Finder copy performance on mounted AppleShare volumes is slow with MacOS 8.0. Upgrade your MacOS software on your client computer to version 8.1 to improve the copy performance.
• If you have a Global Village K56 flex card modem and are using Open Transport PPP 1.0.1 to provide TCP/IP connectivity, you need to disable the menu bar status lights, or launch PPP manually and connect to your ISP, before using the Chooser to connect to an AppleShare file server over TCP/IP.
• The NetWare User Authentication Module is incompatible with the AppleShare Client 3.8 software. Contact Novell for an update.
• The AppleShare Client 3.8 software is not compatible with versions of RunShare prior to version 3.0, and it may cause a crash. Be sure to upgrade to RunShare version 3.0 or later before you install AppleShare Client Software 3.8.
Mail Server
• The AppleShare IP 6.0 Seed Mail Server can not use previous versions of AppleShare IP mail datastores. If you have critical mail that you do not want to be lost, you must download those messages from the AppleShare IP 5.0.x Mail Server before running AppleShare IP 6.0 Beta Seed 2. There is currently no method to upgrade existing AppleShare IP Mail 5.0.x mail databases to 6.0 format. When the final product is released, the AppleShare IP 6.0 Mail Tool will be able to perform this operation.
• Do not rely on the 6.0 Seed mail database stable storage format for your only copy of mail messages, as there are still bugs in this Seed release of the server and the mail database could be lost as a result of one of these bugs. With IMAP protocol access this becomes very important, since users will tend to leave more mail on the server. In addition, while we anticipate no changes at this time, it may become necessary to change the format of the AppleShare IP mail database. Therefore it may not be possible for future "Seed" and "Final" versions of the AppleShare IP 6.0 Mail Server to use previous Seed Versions of the mail database. Again, please be careful with how much data you place on the AppleShare IP Mail Server and remember future versions may not be able to access it.
• The AppleShare IP Mail team is aware of a rare problem which occurs right after installing the AppleShare IP software. This problem only occurs the first time the AppleShare IP Mail server is run on a newly installed AppleShare IP system, and occurs very infrequently. If you happen to experience a problem when launching the AppleShare IP Mail server for the first time, you should:
1. Restart your computer.
2. Throw away the AppleShare IP Mail database that was created.
3. Re-launch the AppleShare IP Mail Server.
This is a known problem and the AppleShare IP Mail team is looking into a solution.
Print Server
• Deleting a large number of jobs (greater than 400) may cause the Print Server to crash.
